Prone vs. Supine

Prone positioning simply means that the child is supported while leaning slightly forward. A simple way to realize the effects of prone positioning is to stand still with your feet together. Place your hands deep into the rear pockets of your jeans and lean slightly forward. Do you feel your lower back, upper leg and butt muscles tighten as you begin leaning forward? When you take a step your very first motion is to lean forward.
Now stand with your back against the wall and your feet placed together about six inches from the floor board. This illustrates supine positioning (supported from behind). Can you feel your body relax as you rest your upper body and head upon the wall? Do you feel the difference in your lower back, butt and upper leg muscles?
The key to developing a child's physical potential is to utilize and strengthen select muscle groups. The child must be able and motivated to participate in physical activities with age appropriate peers. Therapeutic goals can best be realized if they can be incorporated in fun playtime activities.
